The human body comprises a number of glands, of which the most common are the endocrine glands, which are 108 in number. The number 109 is of significance as it is the distance between the sun (multiplied by the diameter of the sun) and the earth.
Out of the 108 endocrine glands, seven major glands are arranged one above the other – Pineal gland, pituitary, thyroid, thymus, pancreas, adrenal and sex glands. These glands influence each other in all bodily functions. Our ancient sages described them as Parameshwara, Sadasiva, Maheshwara, Rudhra, Vishnu, Brahma and Sakthi. It also corresponds to the seven grahas and seven tastes.
Yogis have named them Chakras namely, Sahasrahana, Agni, Visukthi, Anahatha, Manipura, Sukkilam, Moolathara. The seven thathus (basic substance) are named as water, blood, fat, muscle, bone, marrow are seven. To put it in a nut shell, thyroid corresponds to Maheshwara, Visukthi, fat, Mars and bitterness.
Each energy source (Chakra) has got a different number of glands – 1008/2/16/10/6/4. This is the number of blades corresponding to them and geometrical shape. They correspond to 16 respiratory moments/sinus through the nose; 16 blinks of an eye; 16 vibrations of sound. minute (ears); 16 teeth in upper and 16 teeth in lower jaw. The length of the windpipe is 16 inches from the tip of the nose; 16 joints of the vertebral column above the diaphragm and 16 joints below it.
The wrist and ankle joints contain 16 (8+8) bones. In addition to our regular anatomy, physiology and pathology, there are many ways in which thyroid gland can be affected and in turn treated.
To handle thyroid problems in addition to testing T3, T4, BH, ATG + AMA, we need to look into the parts mentioned above, to handle in a better way – learning yoga, asanas and breathing methods. Pranayama, good food habits and better handling of mood will certainly help to lead a better life.
